The Spark That Started It All

In the early 2010s, India’s smartphone market was booming, but there was one major issue: short battery life. Imported power banks were expensive and unreliable, leaving consumers frustrated. Recognizing this gap, Rajpal and his friends — all recent college graduates — decided to experiment.

They converted a small corner of a Delhi garage into a makeshift lab, testing power bank prototypes with components sourced from local markets. Family and friends became their first testers, helping the group refine the product’s performance and design.

A Modest Beginning with a Big Idea

With ₹50,000 pooled from personal savings, the team launched their first batch of just 100 power banks on Flipkart. To their surprise, the units sold out within days, thanks largely to honest user reviews and word-of-mouth marketing.

The team reinvested every rupee of profit back into production, slowly expanding their product range to include chargers, cables, and Bluetooth speakers. The name “Ambrane” — derived from “Ambition” and “Reinvention” — reflected the founders’ belief in constant innovation.

Building a Made-in-India Tech Brand

While many tech companies relied heavily on imports, Ambrane stood out by investing in local manufacturing early on. The founders built an in-house research and development team and began assembling products domestically, aligning with the government’s later Make in India initiative.

By focusing on affordability, durability, and Indian market needs, Ambrane quickly gained traction on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Their devices offered high capacity and reliability at lower prices compared to international brands, attracting a rapidly growing base of young customers.

Scaling Smartly, Growing Steadily

Between 2015 and 2019, Ambrane expanded its catalog to include smartwatches, wireless earphones, and other mobile accessories. The company also began exporting to over 20 countries, including markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

By 2020, Ambrane had reached over 10 million customers, becoming a household name in India’s budget electronics segment. Despite fierce competition, the company maintained its edge through innovation and trust-based marketing.

A Bootstrapped Success Story

Unlike many startups that rely on external funding, Ambrane grew organically — funding each phase through profits rather than venture capital. Ashok Rajpal’s leadership focused on financial discipline, sustainable scaling, and product quality.

“Every problem we faced became a learning experience,” Rajpal said in a recent interview. “We didn’t have investors; our customers were our biggest backers. Their trust powered our growth.”

This bootstrapped model helped Ambrane stay resilient even during tough times like the pandemic, when many electronics businesses struggled with supply chain disruptions.

Charging Toward the Future

Today, Ambrane is a ₹103-crore company with a diverse product lineup that includes smart accessories, audio gadgets, and wearables. The brand’s manufacturing base in Haryana and partnerships with major e-commerce and offline retailers continue to drive its growth.

With a focus on sustainability and new-age technology, Ambrane plans to expand further into smart devices and IoT products, targeting both domestic and global markets.

A Story of Innovation and Determination

From a small garage in Delhi to international retail shelves, Ambrane’s journey is a testament to the power of grassroots innovation. It proves that with the right mix of persistence, customer focus, and local ingenuity, even small experiments can power up into large-scale success stories.
